For how long can you feel a tickle without scratching? Take a moment and think about the time in between the tickle and the scratch. Was it uncomfortable or was it VERY uncomfortable? Now hold that thought and read on.
In the world of Special Needs, there are some disabilities that can be identified by physical characteristics, but there are many others that don't, and usually, people identify them by the person’s behaviors. Most of the time, these behaviors are perceived by society as “weird”, “awkward”, or even “scary”. But when people understand the reason behind those behaviors, the perception can change and become supportive, inclusive and empathetic.
Lindsey Rowe Parker, in her story, was able to present and explain perfectly the reasons why children with Sensory Processing Disorders do what they do and why those behaviors are necessary to them, as scratching a tickle is necessary to you. In the book, the phrase “I cannot explain why” is repeated several times. I feel this was necessary so the reader can understand that these behaviors are beyond the child’s control and that we cannot expect for them to calm down just because we ask them to.
The illustrations are a crucial complement, Rebecca Burgess did a great job with her beautiful and big colorful illustrations that scream the little boy's exact feelings. Very intense and perfect to get this point across.
In the book, you will see all kinds of examples of what a child with sensory differences go through in a day. A great story, a great book, and a great tool to help parents and Educators understand why Wiggles, Stomps and Squeezes are needed, and provide whatever is necessary to calm the Jitters.
