"Who is Jerry?" A book review about Schizophrenia.

A voice in the story, a childhood experience through pictures and goosebumps from cover to end. I was gifted a physical copy of ¨Who is Jerry?¨ written and Illustrated by T.M Jackson. A book with an emotional dedication to the author´s mother, who suffered from mental Illness and to her sisters who helped raising her.

Who is Jerry? is a story about a little girl who lives with her single mother and has to endeavour living with the emotional ups and downs of a parent with schizophrenia. The book mostly focuses on how it affects different areas of the little girl´s daily life.

Because of my background in Education, I read this book thinking of a classroom. Besides being an excellent resource for students who are living in similar circumstances at home, reading this book aloud to the whole class would be an outstanding lesson on empathy. Unfortunately, bullying is still a prevailing issue in schools, and most targets are children whose home circumstances affect their mood or behavior in class. With this story, students will learn that their classmates could be going through very difficult times at home and support and kindness should be the response to peers being or acting "different".

Illustrations are right on point with the story, you could even understand what is going on without even reading it. I was most impressed with the detail to facial expressions.

The book was independently published and it also contains a list of resources for mental Illnesses with a statement that says "It takes a village to change the stigma of mental health in our communities". Who is Jerry? Is a book that should be on every teacher´s and school counselor´s personal bookshelf.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021 (1/29/21) is in its 8th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

Eight years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
