How powerful can a children's book author be when he is able to entertain children with his story, while giving us, the adult who is reading it aloud, a human’s right lesson? Well, author Andres Pi Andreu really nailed it with his book “One Bee Too Many”.
As I read the book I was blown away with the detailed and realistic illustrations by Kim Amate, I immediately thought this was great for children, because I know, from personal experience with my daughter, that books with busy detailed illustrations keep children entertained for longer periods of time. But, as I approached the last pages, right where the Queen Bee made an appearance and started her speech, I began to feel goosebumps, and by the end of the book, I was feeling very emotional towards the message of the story.
It was then when I thought to myself, this is not just a children's book, this is a tool, a resource for parents and educators to teach small children about tolerance, acceptance and kindness. One of the best ways to speak to children about difficult topics is with picture books. The book will present the “issue” in a way that children understand. They live the story through the eyes of the characters and the illustrations help visualize the scenarios and surrounding environments as well as the actions.
This story talks about how the Bee Colony suddenly finds out that there was one extra bee, and everyone starts “Freaking out”. They obsessively started looking, so this extra bee wouldn't take their honey, space or job. It was then when the Queen Bee came in and gave every bee, and human reader a beautiful lesson, that in a way, makes reference to Immigration.
